the males of the clan of chimpanzees
which Flo and her children had left
became stricken with polio
swinging from the jungle trees with paralyzed limbs
and nursing their wounds

which they received by the paws
of a neighboring clan from the north
who would beat them in outnumbered fights
5 sometimes 6 against 1
they bullied their neighbors

the females grew uneasy
one of which was related to Flo
the took up the horrible practice
she began at first
to eat her own babies

and then one by one
she beat off the defending mothers
and eating their children she looked at them sadly
like she had no choice against the madness which took her
like the illness which crippled her mates
